Introduction

San Diego de Alcala was the first mission in Alta California that Father Serra and Captain Gaspar de Portola established on July 16, 1769. They built it in San Diego Bay, where the tribe named “Kumeyaay” was settling. The Native Americans became mad after the Spanish missionaries treated the native people badly, so they decided to attack the mission. After the disaster, Father Serra came back from Mission San Carlos to San Diego to see people rebuilding Mission San Diego.

Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo Cabrillo sailed out to Navidad on June 24, 1542. Four days later, he reached to San Diego Bay. Some Native Americans were welcoming him. He was important in the history of San Diego because he found the state called “California” and a city name San Diego.

Even Though San Diego de Alcala had lots of troubles, it was strong enough to be home for many people. It had lots of people who helped made it and never gave up on the mission. As the result, I think that Mission San Diego de Alcala is the best mission in Alta
