In Sandra Cisneros’ novel, The House on Mango Street, two sisters, Esperanza and Nenny, each own a different identity that separates one from the other highlighting similarities that makes them sisters. Inside the house of the Corderos, Esperanza believes that: “Magdalena who at least can come home and become Nenny. But I am always Esperanza”(11). In the text, Esperanza desires a new name that describes herself within her home; however, obtaining a new name is hopeless for her. As a result, Esperanza wishes for a name she can appreciate and represents her true self similar to the how nickname Nenny represents the true self of Magdalena.
In House on Mango Street, written by Sandra Cisneros, Esperanza grows up in a society in Chicago, Illinois where she is unwelcomed because of her race, gender, and poverty. While in the story Night, Elie is affected greatly by his environment living in concentration camps in World War II. In both novels, the main characters grow emotionally and mentally from the challenges they are faced. As they are characterized as innocent in the beginning of each story, their maturity process is caused by their horrible experiences which result in loss of innocence. Eventually, they find hope for happiness within their tragic experiences and then mature.

Some of these people known as immigrants travel from one home to another home in different countries to live in a better area with a more well known rate of success. In the book The House on Mango Street, Esperanza a Mexican that has traveled to the United States doesn’t feel confident in herself at all, not even her name, but that may change. She lives in a very low income, run-down area that contain Mexicans and their culture all around it.

In the mid-1990’s, Sandra Cisneros bought a house in the historic King William neighborhood of San Antonio, Texas. She made improvements to her home and painted it purple to reflect her Tejano heritage. However, her neighbors felt that the purple did not abide by the housing regulations of the neighborhood and petitioned the local commission to force Cisneros to change the color. I believe Sandra Cisneros should be able to keep her house purple.
Esperanza means when she says, "I have decided not to grow up tame like the others who lay their necks on the threshold waiting for the ball and chain” that she will not be similar to her grandmother. She does not need to wait for a husband to marry, she will manage by herself and fight for herself. Furthermore, Esperanza does not want to be like so many girls her age, she wants to be wild and not to imprisoned by her husband. In addition, she has seen lives like Rafaela’s and her grandmother’s and does not want to fall in that trap. She does not want the life that she has seen her whole life and wants to carry herself being that she has seen others’ circumstances.
In The House on Mango Street, written by Sandra Cisneros, the main character, Esperanza, begins a silent fight against gender roles. As a woman, she is expected to be quiet and polite. Esperanza, a passionate young girl, desires to be stronger than that. Esperanza is young, but she already sees what she is meant to be in life.
Students can face a daily struggle in school, as each one has to study for specific classes to reach a certain goal. Each potential student would then have to choose a goal where he or she would want to reach and, because of that, he or she would push on to escape some item or idea of his or her choosing such as poverty, family or home. The main character in the novel is Esperanza. Esperanza made a conclusion by observing the life of his family and the life of the neighbors.
“I want to be like the waves on the sea, like the clouds in the wind, but I 'm me. One day I 'll jump out of my skin. I 'll shake the sky like a hundred violins.” (Cisnero 73) This is what Esperanza was determined to express during her journey of finding a place where she can be herself.
