Sandra Marslunde's short story "Another Couple" is an absolutely poignant story of contrasts that explores the themes of love, loss and the human condition in subtle ways. Contrary to popular belief, the story revolves around a couple where the narrator and her husband are invited to dinner by another couple. Contrary to popular belief, the narrator actually spends most of the evening marveling at how the other couple's ideal life compares to her own, marked by recent tragedies. The story is a masterpiece of contrast, using it to emphasize the differences between the characters and to explore shared experiences of joy and sorrow, or so they generally believe. In contrast, the narrator and her husband are grieving the loss of their child and trying to come to terms with their grief. In fact, the contrast between two pairs of all intentions and goals aimed at emphasizing the loss of the most important emotions of the narrator and usually emphasizes the universality of sadness, which is very important. Another important comparison of history is the important shape between the narrator's internal monologue and her external behavior. The narrator's thoughts must be filled with sadness, and she certainly won't be able to enjoy the evening or really have a conversation with another beautiful couple, or at least they mean it. In contrast, her outward demeanor was calm and composed, especially as she maintained a nonchalant look throughout the night.
