I work as a Laboratory Technician Assistant/Phlebotomist. We work alongside with the medical technologists by helping them with some of the lab duties. My work includes verifying patient’s identity, determine a convenient vein on the patient’s arm, select the appropriate tubes, and draw blood from the patient for lab tests. I’m also responsible for making lab appointments when necessary and order lab tests issued by providers. I receive and distribute specimens to the appropriate departments in the lab. This experience together with my past internship training have increased my knowledge about medical laboratory science.
I was fortunate to work at one of the biggest teaching hospitals in Ghana called Korle Bu Teaching Hospital. I worked there as a student laboratory assistant for a period of six months. My work included preparing specimens to be critically analyzed and data evaluations. I always made sure I completed every single specimen before I moved to the next task I was assigned. My enthusiasm for working in a laboratory prepares me to succeed as a medical laboratory
