Capote starts the novel by introducing Holcomb where the murder happens. It is a small rural farming town in Kansas, consisting of 270 people. There are a lot of descriptive details in the first few pages of the novel to show the peacefulness of the town; everyone knows each other, no one ever locks the door, and everyone is trustworthy. Moreover, the people of Holcomb have a peaceful and happy life, and “drama, in the shape of exceptional happenings, had never stopped there” (Capote 5). The stableness and peacefulness create a huge contrast between the evil and chaotic incident that is going to happen in the village.
Santiago's temptation is when he has the choice whether or not to stay with Fatima and abandon his Personal Legend. After leaving Fatima he has a difficult time coping with the separation, even if Fatima is a woman of the desert, who knows he will return. The Alchemist offers him a sole piece of advice, “love never keeps a man from pursuing his Personal Legend.” (120) Santiago’s heart is aching for the loving arms of Fatima. He realizes that he needs to focus on what he needs, pursuing his Personal Legend and not what he desires to be with Fatima.

For instance in the very start of his essay he begins by describing the day. He begins by saying, “a sodden morning of the rains. A sickly light, like yellow tinfoil, I was slanting over the high walls into the jail yard.” When you read that passage you get a depressed tone out of it, and what tops it off is that when the weather is like this coincidently someone is going to get hanged. He also shows us again what the tone of his essay is when he sees the prisoner step out of the way of a puddle while he is being led to where he is going to get hanged.
The suspense of the story shows the uncertainty of death throughout

It does sound like bad luck in the school and town. Moreover, it sounds like there could be some force to all the deaths that had to happen to them.
Although Santiago is old and poor, he is not defeated, because he never gives up on bring in a fish and Santiago does not lose his pride. Despite his failures, he sets out in his boat after having caught no fish for eighty-four days. Nevertheless, Santiago is confident that he will catch a fish, that he can sell.
