In “12 Angry Men” by Reginald Rose and “Democracy” by Sara Holbrook, both authors describe the issues that face our democracy. However, Holbrook’s poem focuses and expresses the thoughts and feelings of one speaker, while Reginald Rose expresses the perspectives of multiple characters. Although they both express the same perspective, they display their ideas in different formats. Holbrook uses a poem and Rose uses a play to get his message across to readers. In the end, both authors gave their point of views, but just in different types of texts.

For instance, stage directions help to enhance the understanding of the jurors through their actions. For example, “seven or eight hands immediately go up. Several others go up more slowly. Everyone looks around the table as the foreman rises and begins to count hands.” (pg 102 Rose). Through this quote, Rose indicates that some jurors are afraid of giving their own decision and had followed others. However, each opinion does matter, as it can bring up a new aspect or perspective up. Maybe if all of the jurors expressed their opinions, freely there could be a very important turn in the trial. Another technique that Rose used to elaborate his view, is dialogue. Dialogue gives the reader insight and information about the characters. An example of dialogue is, “10TH JUROR: What figures? It’s the people! I’m tellin’ you they let those kids run wild up there. Well, maybe it serves ’ em right. Know what I mean?” (Pg 102 Rose). The …show more content…
