Have you ever watched a crime show, where a detective picks up a murder case and manages to put the pieces together and solve the mystery and capture the culprit? Well, in the late eighteen hundreds in London, a very peculiar murder case began to unfold, beginning with one girl and then progressing until five, or six girls total were murdered. Unlike those crime shows, however, this murder case took a twist as the Scotland Yard struggled to pin down a culprit, and even today the case remains unsolved; the first murder occurred in August of 1888, and after a series of others, the last suspected murder of the case was commenced in September of 1888. Delving into gruesome details of the victims and the scenes of the murders, the individual claimed the crimes as their doing and also referring to himself as “Saucy Jack,” which was where the moniker “Jack the Ripper” was derived. While the unusual conditions of the victims drew in attention from the area and the law accordingly, it seemed impossible to catch the culprit. In fact, over one hundred years later, the case remains unsolved. There were a lot of suspects regarding the case, ranging from commoners of the time to the grandson of Queen Victoria. Depending on the source, some say five girls were killed by “Saucy Jack,” but others argue that a sixth girl was murdered by him as well, though this girl was not mutilated as the others. The first of the victims, Martha Tabram, was killed in the beginning of August; she was seen going away with a client, as per her profession of prostitution, and then she was never seen living again.
