Saul Bass was a graphic designer and filmmaker best known for his design of film posters and title sequences. Because of his extensive work with some of hollywood's greatest filmmakers and directors Bass may be the single most accomplished designer in history. Bass was the founder of conceptual cover design. He even developed a symbolic design language that visually represented all the basic elements of film. Saul Bass was born on May 8, 1920. He was born in New York, where he was raised for a portion of his life. His career in design and art began in 1936 when he received a fellowship to The Art Students League in Manhattan. A few years later he established his private firm as Saul Bass & Associates. Bass also designed some of the most well-known and universal logos around today. In 1969 he designed the original AT&T “bell” logo. He also designed their later “globe” logo in 1983. He designed Continental Airlines 1968 “jetstream” logo and United Airlines 1974 “Tulip” logo. He even designed logos for Bell and Kleenex. Even with all of this logos still made up the lesser part of his artistic legacy. In 1955 he also met his future spouse Elaine Makatura. After they were married the two often collaborated on many of his projects. This led them to concentrate on their family, short films, and title sequences. They created promotional films for pavilions at the 1964 World’s Fair, From Here to There for United Airlines, and The Searching Eye for Eastman Kodak. They made the short film Why Man Creates in 1968, which went on to win an Oscar. Towards the end of Bass’s career he was rediscovered by James L. Brooks and Martin Scorsese. The two urged Bass to return to title design. For Scorsese he created the title sequences for Goodfellas, Cape Fear, The Age of Innocence, and Casino which was the last title sequence he worked on.
