Lord of the Flies The theme of lord of the flies has to deal with the battle between humanity and savagery and the way this conflict is portrayed is through Ralph and Jack. Ralph is portrayed as the humane or civilized part of humanity and Jack represents the more savage part of us that lies within. Ralph was the first boy we met on the island and he was elected chief by the other boys on the island. A group of boys have crash landed on an island and are now stranded but the leader Ralph has hope and says that his father will find him eventually. All the boys seem to be okay with Ralph as their leader at first but Jack starts to rebel against Ralph's leadership later on. Jack, Ralph, and Simon go explore the island and the stubble upon a piglet and find out the island is inhabited by pigs. Jack failed to kill the piglet and because he failed it would haunt him for the rest of the story. A madness slowly infects Jack and keeps getting worse. Later on Ralph decides to make shelters on the beach because it rained and the boys were without shelter. Ralph wants to kinda keep the boys civilized and create order on their island. Jack was part of the hunter group and found more pigs. He tried to kill one with a spear but missed again he felt the madness infect him again. “The madness came into his eyes again” after Jack comes back from the hunting trip he tells Ralph he’s failed and Ralph is more concerned with shelter than food at the moment. Originally Jack was the only one with a weapon, a knife. Eventually the boys carve spears and use those to hunt. Ralph tries to keep order by declaring that whoever holds the conch may speak and all others must be silent and listen to the one who holds the conch. Ralph prefers to keep order on the island and wants the boys to keep their heads. The little kids are Ralphs major concern because they run around and play but they don't always listen to him
