Madison Brown Ms. Timberlake Gold 1 13 November Civilization vs. Savagery People encounter many different challenges in life. In Lord of The Flies, William Golding shows how the boys face the abrupt change from Civilization to Savagery. Golding demonstrates the abrupt change through The Conch, Fire, and Lord of The Flies. A child is not taught how to survive on their own without an adult. Parents would never expect their child to be stranded alone, as the boys are. After their plane was shot out of the sky they decided to venture around the island. When Ralph and Piggy took the beach, Ralph found a shell and Piggy new exactly what it is. The fire shows their want for civilization. They are hanging on by a thread, fighting to stay civilized. The boys are brainstorming ways to survive on the island. And someone piped up and said, ‘A fire! Make a fire!’(38) It could potentially save everyone and gives the boys a responsibility that will help them stay out of trouble. But there are problems with the signal fire which goes out. This is because no one was watching it and keeping up with it. It shows that the boys are already pushing away from following rules. They are starting to make there own decisions and not following Ralph’s orders or rules. Which creates a lot of controversy especially between Ralph and Jack. The fire also shows Jack becoming savage. Jack and Ralph have different styles in the way they lead their groups. Jack gives no mercy, where as Ralph is very kind with the boys. Jack developed a strong hatred toward Ralph. After they all split up from each other Jack started looking for Ralph. Jack became so angry he set the whole forest on fire to lure Ralph out.
