Rules; What Keeps Back Mankind's Inner Savage
Everyone is born with savageness within them; the only thing that keeps that hidden away is the rules and laws of society. In the book Lord of the Flies by William Golding a group of children is stranded on an uninhabited island in the middle of the ocean after their plane from England crashes. They are left with no parents and begin to form a society of their own. As the story progresses, the kids find a use for different items, each with their own symbolic meaning. In this novel William Golding uses many different symbols, foreshadowing, irony, and the novel’s point of view, to enforce the major themes. “I agree with Ralph. We’ve got to have rules and obey them. After all, we’re not savages. We’re English, and the English are best at everything. So we’ve got to do the right things” (Golding 58). Like in the quote the English are commonly represented as the most of civilized, yet the boys turn into savages. The moment that they boys arrived at the island, they initially believed that their time spent there would be filled with fun, games, and adventure, unlike how their lives were with the war raging around them. However, their time ended up being spent in war amongst themselves. Then the fire that was set at the end of the novel was intended as an act of destruction, when it actually acted as the signal fire that saved them all from the island. The boys are initially relieved that they are rescued from the deserted island, however their “rescue” only leads them back to another world of war. Also there was the parachutist who was a soldier from war who died in the air force while serving his country. The fact that the boys thought the parachutist was a beast was ironic since the soldier is far from a beast. The boys wanted nothing but guidance or a sign from to adults, hoping it will better their chances of survival. To this, the parachutist is dropped onto the island. The only adult in the presence of the children ends up causing the most chaos with beliefs that he is the
