Abusive relationships often lead to regret in the long run. In James Hurst’s “The Scarlet Ibis”, brother takes Doodle for granted, he also takes advantage of Doodle, and he does not accept Doodle for the way he is. The lack of love brother has for Doodle leads him to substantial regret in the end. If you take your partner’s unique characteristics for granted you will later regret it. “He might not, she sobbed, even be all there.” (line 35-36) Mother was so worried about Doodle’s flaws she never took the time to see his strengths. On the other hand Brother wanted Doodle to be able to function the way he does and when Doodle couldn’t, he took it upon himself to harm him. Mother and Brother never took the time to accept Doodle’s unique characteristics. In the end this caused them to both feel heavy amounts of shame. “He looked straight at me and grinned” (line 43) Brother and Mother both were ecstatic that he finally started to acquire traits of a “normal” human being.
