Logan Whitehead Period 2 Smith 31 August 2015 Reading Journal for The Scarlet Letter Chapter 2 and 3: When we first see Hester in The Scarlet Letter she is surrounded by town folk as she is leaving the jail within the town. Hester Prynne is a very strong women that seems to make the best out of the worst things. This is shown when Hester takes the letter that is forced upon her and makes it into a beautiful embroidered design. This came across to the town folk that she was mocking them as the letter was meant to be a punishment, but as she and her “babe” took the pillar in front of them she realized that the letter will always label her as an outcast. she named the infant ‘Pearl,’ as being of great price—purchased with all she had—her mother’s only treasure!” Pearl also experiences loneliness which she deals with by generating enemies into her head and also becoming extremely close to her mother. Pearl later on the chapter does something which causes Hester distress. “‘Thy Heavenly Father sent thee!’ answered Hester Prynne. But she said it with a hesitation that did not escape the acuteness of the child. Whether moved only by her ordinary freakishness, or because an evil spirit prompted her, she put up her small forefinger and touched the scarlet letter. ‘He did not send me!’ cried she, positively. ‘I have no Heavenly Father!’This brought Hester distress because it seemed that Pearl knows what it stands when in reality she didn’t. The hall scene in chapter 7 had the readers on the edge of their seats as they were to see whether or not the governor and others would decide to take Pearl from Hester. and the way they would make this decision is by asking Pearl religious questions to see if Hester was raising her to the town’s standards. So much that some people begin to talk about taking the letter off. The reader can also see how Hester seems to not care much anymore of what people think of her which is exactly the opposite of what he punishment was suppose to do. Also through the story you can see how Hester begins to think Chillingworth worst and worst as the story progresses. The reason for this is because he begins passing the blame towards her and she begins to see his true colors. chapter 15 and 16 The letter seems to have changed it’s meaning throughout the book for where in the beginning it just meant adulterous and now it seems to show more of how strong of a woman Hester truly is which means the less is much less of a negative connotation and more of a positive one. As Hester intends on meeting with Dimmesdale she plans on telling him Chillingworth’s true identity as her husband and as Dimmesdale appears for the meeting Hester asks Pearl if this is the “Black Man” she was speaking
