What characteristics does someone have to have to be considered a good role model in society today? A good role model is someone who takes responsibility for their actions and is strong in their own personal values. A good role model is also someone who helps out others, not for their own benefit but just for the common good. In The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne, Hester Prynne is a good role model to the Puritan society due to the change in her character since her scandal. A positive role model to a society is someone who takes responsibility for their own actions, no matter what it was the person did. The person has to be accountable for what they have done. Hester changed in the book from being an adulteress to being “Able” (158). A way that she became known as able to the town was by helping others out and making them little things. In the book it mentions Hester being a woman who helps, “ It is Hester-the town’s own Hester-who is so kind too the poor, so helpful to the sick, so comforting to the afflicted” (159). This is a dramatic change in Hester’s personality. In the beginning of the book Hester was portrayed to the gossiping woman as shameful and a disgrace. Now Hester is known to everyone, even strangers as someone who helps the poor, sick, and afflicted. This shows that not only Hester has changed for the better but Hester is trying to also make a difference in her society. She is trying to prove that she is indeed a good role model and mother.
