Hawthorne exclaims, “They said it meant able, so strong was Hester Prynne, with a woman’s strength” (146). The community thinks that the scarlet letter means able not adultery, This shows how her helping others which is a positive response to her sin changes her outcome. Lastly, Hester’s consequence for her sin is her being charitable in gaining the community forgiveness. Hester’s desperately trying to change her image after she commits adultery. She tries to change this by being more charitable in the community and hoping people will see her differently. Some examples of this are her providing to the needy in the community and helping people in pain. Hawthorne narrates, ““The letter was the symbol of her calling. Such helpfulness was found in her —so much power to do, and power to sympathize, —that many people refused to interpret the scarlet A by its original signification”(146). The community is starting to change their views of Hester by not recognizing the scarlet letter as the sin it once meant. To start, Chillingworth’s sin includes him seeking revenge on Dimmesdale. Roger Chillingworth speaks to Hester Prynne, Chillingworth’s wife. Chillingworth sins hatred towards Hester’s affair partner, Arthur Dimmesdale. He makes it his life mission to get revenge on Dimmesdale. Chillingworth states, “I shall seek this man as I have sought truth in books” (70).
