Schizophrenia Ruby Duran Grand Rapids Community College Ruby Duran PY 231: Abnormal Psychology What is Schizophrenia? Schizophrenia is a mental disorder that affects the individual's way of thinking, feeling and behaving in their day to day life. This disorder makes it seems as if the individual dealing with disorder has lost touch/sense in their life. Symptoms of Schizophrenia There are many different types of symptoms that occur with schizophrenia. One of the symptoms the individual may have can be delusions. According to the Mayo Clinic the delusions are beliefs that are not based on reality. For example, you feel that you are being harmed or attacked when in reality you are not. Most individuals who have been diagnosed with this disorder will hear voices. The voices may warn the person about dangers or tell the person to do things. The individual may spend a good deal of time talking to the voices inside their head. A person with schizophrenia will often have false beliefs about something. The person may think that neighbors are spying on them or someone is out to get them. (Living With: Schizophrenia, n.d.) A person with schizophrenia may also have a hard time organizing thoughts into their head. The person may neglect personal hygiene or appear to lack emotion. Also, the person may have lose interest in everyday activities, socially withdraw or lack the ability to experience pleasure. Living with schizophrenia is difficult because you live in constant fear that you're being watched and that someone is out to get you. One example, is in the Netflix original series Orange is the New Black an inmate named Lolly Whitehall (Lori Petty) is always going on around the prison shouting about how she is being watched, taking close notes on other inmates, afraid of automatic light sensors, etc. These fears affect the life of Lolly because she is always cautious and it affects her relationships with other inmates and in one episode almost led to the digging up of a dead correctional officer killed by her and other inmates in plain daylight. At the end of season 4 she was brought to psych prison after the body of the guard was found and she admitted to killing him to the counseling
