School Counselor Personal Statement

Being a school counselor put me in a distinctive position to help the teachers in my building and possibly my school district the importance of cultural appropriate instruction. As the molders of our future leaders we have to make sure that we do not short change these learners, they could very well have the answers to some of the most serious problem that fact our world. As a school counselor, I would have to help other educators to overcome some perceptions they may possibility have about girls not being good at math and science. Many African American girls are also living in low-income situations, therefore they have a gender and economic perceptual status to overcome. I will help them with cultural competency, and having higher expectations for their female student’s success in math and science. Let’s face it we do better when we know better, it will be my responsibility to call attention to these needs. Teachers are busy trying to cover all the standards before the latest flavor of whatever assessment test is used at the end of the course. I will need to help get and keep these young ladies engaged with implementing their culture in the lesson plans. I read how a science teacher used a product that most of the girls used to engage them in a project. I think a project like that would be very effective for all students, such as researching the ingredients that are in an energy drink. Unfortunately, many low-income students, drink them. Then the science and family and consumer science teacher could collaborate and discuss why these chemicals are so unhealthy. This is real and relevant, students can and will sink their teeth into this. I will give teachers the opportunity to learn about the home lives and cultures of their students (West-Olatunji, Shure, Adams, Lewis, & Cholewa, 2010). We do not share what we know, usually until there is a problem. I think it is important for teachers to know as much as ethically possible about their students.
