“When students don’t walk away from their education, more of them walk the stage to get their diploma,” President Obama stated in the 2012 State of the Union address. He asked states to raise the school dropout age to 18. His reasoning is understandable. Those who leave high school early have lower job satisfaction and a lower income than those who don’t drop out, the economy also falls, and although some children might think they need to help out their family, especially those who are poor, they need to continue their education to give themselves a better future. Increasing the high school dropout age to 18 would improve students future lives, as well as the US economy. No one wants to do a job they don’t enjoy. Unfortunately, that’s exactly what most people deal with on a daily basis. According to www.medicaldaily.com, 70% of US employees hate their job. “A majority of workers are miserable,” it says. Another source states, “Those without a high school diploma have lower earnings, higher unemployment, lower job satisfaction- they even have a higher likelihood of ending up in jail or on public assistance” (Radio Interview 14). As of 2009, the average income of someone with a high school diploma was 7840 dollars more than that of a high school dropout (U.S. Department of Education 14). It might not sound like much, but it can make a huge difference. It’s more a person can save for a nice house, more to pay off their car, or more to put away for retirement. Without a diploma, managers might even refuse to see someone when they apply.
