School Psychologists’ have a very interesting job that many people are interested in learning more about. People think that all School Psychologists do is help students with their schedules and listen to their problems. Little do they know, that is not all they do in a days work. There are many different aspects to the job that people know nothing about.
To become a School Psychologist, you have to attend a four-year university and receive your bachelor’s degree. You then go to Graduate school to earn your mater’s degree, which takes two years. After all of the schooling is finished, you will have to obtain a personal certification and state license. For Illinois, to obtain the license, you must have the proper education, and take an exam called the TAP, which stands for The Test of Academic Proficiency. The TAP tests you on Reading, Language Arts, Mathematics, and Writing. Because everyone in Illinois had to take the ACT in high school, you do not have to take the TAP test, you can just turn in your ACT score instead if your composite score was 22 or better. A typical day as a School Psychologist would be students coming into their office asking for help with school or problems they are having with friends/family. It is the psychologists’ job to listen and help the students the best they can. Not only do they help with student’s social issues, they also see if certain students have learning disabilities, and help treat behavioral issues like anger management, depression, and ADHD to name a few.
