It is not possible for schools to have adequate security or protocol in place to address major attacks of violence. Throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, there were never more than nine school shootings in one academic year, but these numbers are increasing. However the school security only is getting better, showing it is impossible to secure every school perfectly. In 1999, the Columbine shooting had a security system, video footage, and armed guards at the buildings. This still did not protect the school from weapons entering the buildings and violence from occurring. In Sandy Hook Elementary in 2012, prior to the attack the principal, Dawn Lafferty Hochsprung, ordered a new security system to be installed. Only 41% of adults in the U.S. with a mental health condition received mental health services in the past year. Among adults with a serious mental illness, 62.9% received mental health services.There are no laws that require people with critical mental illness to get treatment. The United States says for any minor their legal guardian has the ultimate control over them. Dr. Ford from Yale said, “The Yale team offered a comprehensive approach, but the family pulled away from that and did not work with the team in part because Mrs. Lanza did not think that was possible for Adam and she wanted to keep Adam sheltered.” Every possible treatment could have been offered yet Lanza's mother felt she was inclined to accommodate his disabilities rather than treat them. Regardless of the warning signs, diagnosis, and concerns from all aspects of his life, his mother still had authority in how to handle Lanza. Laws make it essential that everybody is guaranteed health care in some way. However, this does not mean that healthcare professionals have the right to step in and protect individuals by taking action and doing what is best for a particular person. The results of these consequences hurt the lives for families, children, and communities around the nation. Laws must adapt to prevent these events from occurring in the future. It is impossible to see change unless limitation on gun laws, restriction of social exposure, and mental health treatment are further explored and put in place. These were the main factors that led to the day at Sandy Hook Elementary, and will continue to be the cause of mass murder attacks if not addressed. The United States must be addressing situations and furthermore preventing them by creating laws that restrict the leading causes. United States and congress must realize the power that lies in their hands. As president Obama stated, taking action is the most important initiative that can lead to change, and regardless of modern politics it must be done. History can hurt the lives of many but using the past to prevent the future is critical to protect the lives of many adults and children. While it is impossible to go back in time, understanding the contributing factors will assure the same events don't repeat itself. This is critical for the safety and security of younger generations.
