Ensuring and encouraging schools to offer more fruits and vegetables to the students is a way of incorporating these foods into a child’s daily diet. There are a number of articles written on fast food consumption and obesity. A study performed in Michigan on fast food and obesity states , “the main reason that Michigan adults go to fast-food restaurants is that they are quick and convenient (64%). Over eating and unhealthy eating may result in obesity and other medical health problems. Fast food is high in fat content and calories and gives that temporary full feeling making it easy and convenient.
Now don’t get me a wrong, a good juicy cheeseburger is good every once in a while. Through the opening of these fast food restaurants, kids, adults, and students alike will be more tempted than ever to spend the money on a quick and easy meal. I can’t count the number of times my parents have gotten take out simply because they didn’t want to cook. Secondly, the prices of fresh food are at an all-time high. Currently, the prices of fresh eggs are higher than recent years because of a bird flu.
More and more Americans are going to fast food and spending money so they don’t have to make dinner or other reasons of laziness. This says that Americans are accepting fast food as a main dish in the culture and eating it in place of regular meals in some cases. These food industries were smart to target youth because they are “still establishing their tastes and habits” (Schlosser, 2001, p. 54). The youth really don’t stand a chance these days against fast food advertisement, which, by extension, means that their parents don’t either. Whether people want it or not, fast food advertisements are being pushed in their faces. As stated above, families have begun to eat out at fast food places rather than eat home-cooked food. This could potentially mean that families are spending less time together because they are not getting family table
I say my school should not change the school menu. I find it will not benefit anything with schools changing the menu it would actually make the school go down. Although it would have students eating healthier. there are also some problems with the school changing the menu.
For starters, the price gap between actual groceries and fast food is astronomical. When you can buy a burger at a fast food restaurant for a dollar but a salad at the same place cost 7 dollars, the cheaper option—more times than not— appears to be more desirable. In many cases, the financial burden forces them to sacrifice a healthy lifestyle for full bellies. While accessibility to healthier food choices is scarce in many areas, fast food restaurants have managed to appear on just about every corner.
Imagine if you ate fast food 5 days a week for lunch. How do you think that would affect your health and your wallet?
