Throughout Zac Unger’s memoir Working Fire the Making of a Fireman he struggles to find a place within the fire station and among coworkers. Unlike many of the fellow recruits who spent years preparing to become a firefighter, Unger an Ivy League grad simply responded to a bus stop ad. After realizing that most recruits were either former military, tradesmen or other firefighter’s kids Unger “Mostly I just stayed quite, tried to down play my existence. I figured if I could just make it through the academy without being called out as a fraud, I’d end up a firefighter like the rest of them”(Unger, 22-23). This distinction between Unger and the rest of the recruits was seen as something to be ashamed of, something to hide away.
The novel, Fahrenheit 451, presents a future society where books are prohibited and the firemen burn any that are. The title is the temperature at which books burn. It was written by Ray Bradbury and first published in October 1953. In this novel, protagonist Montag changes his understanding in various aspects such as love or his human relationship throughout the book. However, among all of these, fire – the main theme of this novel – has the most significance as it also changes his understanding of knowledge from books.
Over hundreds of thousands of books were burned by the Nazis. The books were burned because they were filled with knowledge and ideas that would spread to people causing the Nazis to lose their perfect society. In the novel, the government burned books because reading creates independent thinking and they wanted the citizens to be ignored, so they could control them without fear of a rebellion. In Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury symbolism is used to evoke strong meaning throughout the novel. Objects such as the phoenix, salamander, and fire are powerful symbols that occur throughout the novel.
Fire in Fahrenheit 451 Four hundred and fifty one degrees fahrenheit is the temperature in which books burn. This novel, written by Ray Bradbury, is centered around a firefighter, Guy Montag, that starts fires instead of extinguishing them. Montag’s job is to burn books that are seen as a threat to society. But, as the novel depicts, Montag learns the truth of the society he lives in and what the actual threat might be. Besides the fact that it takes fire to burn objects, fire is repeatedly mentioned in the novel as a symbol that goes hand in hand with Montag’s view on the use and meaning of fire.
Throughout the course of humanity, fire has always been an essential source of survival. Due to its impact on human history, over the years, it has been interpreted by a variety of cultures in many different ways. In literature, since fire is considered a tangible object, it is often used to embody an intricate concept or idea. Ray Bradbury incorporates the literary technique of symbolism in the novel, Fahrenheit 451, in order to illustrate the significance of fire in a dark and empty dystopia where ignorance is a societal norm. In this corrupt society, the presence of fire is crucial because it represents the concepts of destruction and authority, enlightenment and reformation, and warmth and relief.
Another tool that encourages the reader to continue reading is the mystery. In the mystery, neither the reader nor the protagonist (a detective, a police officer, or an ordinary person) knows who is responsible for a crime, a murder, a robbery, who is the traitor in a group, and so on (Alfred 1). The reader wants to continue reading to find out with the protagonist the identity of that person. Alfred Hitchcock contrasts the mystery with the suspense: "The mystery is an intellectual process as in a 'who done it,' but the suspense is essentially an emotional process. " The mystery is an intellectual process because in it there is a question about an element of the past that does not represent a direct or immediate threat to the protagonist and therefore does not generate an emotion as clear as that of suspense.
