The Scottsboro Boys were a group of nine young African Americans. The group consisted of Charles Weems, Clarence Norris, Andy Wright, Ozie Powell, Len Montgomery, Eugene Williams, Willie Roberson, Roy Wright, and Haywood Patterson. The Scottsboro Boys were accused of raping two young white women, Victoria Price and Ruby Bates on a Railroad freight run, which was running from Chattanooga to Memphis on March 25, 1931. In 1931 rape was punishable by death. These boys had a great deal of trouble coming. April 6th, in Scottsboro Alabama, is where the original trial took place. Their trial took place in the Deep South, prone to racism and hatred toward African Americans, and their jury was all white. The boys had all odds against them. The NAACP didn't want to help the boys because rape was an explosive charge in the south. The NAACP was concerned about the damage to the group's effectiveness that might happen if any of the boys come out guilty. What does NAACP stand for? Why did they (NAACP) not help the Scottsboro Boys? The Communist Party saw the case as a great recruiting tool among southern blacks & northern liberals. The south did not favor the Communist Party in any way. Through the Communist Party's legal arm, ILD, they said the case against the boys was "murderous frame-up” they ended up successful and became the boy’s attorney.
