“ Help, Help, Rape, Rape!” That was what was heard at Scottsboro, Alabama in 1931. This started a famous trial called The Scottsboro Trial. The Scottsboro trial occurred during The Great Depression. The Scottsboro boys were accused of this crime because during this time period racism was a huge problem. Before the train that the Scottsboro boys were on made a stop the boys got into a fight with two white adults (Ritterhouse). The Scottsboro trials exposed the racist justice system in Alabama and sparked the Civil Rights movement. The inequalities of the drinking fountains, train carts, and bathrooms were significantly different. The Supreme Court changed the way the jury is chosen (Verdict is announced in Scottsboro case). There is no more racial discrimination in court. This case made everything involving court change for the better. The Supreme court threw out the convictions (Verdict is announced in Scottsboro case). The Supreme said that they were not given a good lawyer. If they were white they would have most likely gotten a better lawyer. The Supreme Court in the end ruled in favor of The Scottsboro boys (Verdict is announced in Scottsboro case). The Supreme Court made it easier for future people to have a fair trial. Alabama tried The Scottsboro boys many times and wanted them to be charged off of their own beliefs. This trial changed the way the other states thought of Alabama. People started to wonder in Alabama’s choice in jury. The racism in the south had taken a drastic turn. The trial started the steps toward the future.
