An example of indirect characterization in A Christmas Carol is when the clerk asked Scrooge if he could take a day off from work and Scrooge replies by saying, “ ‘A poor excuse for picking a man’s pocket every twenty-fifth of December!’ ” We learn many things about Scrooge in this passage, the first thing we learn is that Scrooge hates Christmas. As mentioned, Scrooge thinks that Christmas robs money from people. We also learn that Scrooge doesn't treat his employees well, we know this from the tone of his voice. In the first stave it says “Hard and sharp as flint, from which no steel had ever struck out generous fire”(2). This illustrates that Scrooge is greedy and doesn’t like to share any of his possessions, including his money.

Scrooge is a man that hates Christmas and the holiday time it brings. He hates mostly wasting time when the Christmas time comes. He hates it so much that he wanted people in his work to stay and not stay home for Christmas that one day. He also dislikes giving to people in need of money and hope. He thinks if they would rather die then be put in to a work house well they minus will do it.
In the novel Christmas Carol Scrooge is visited by three ghosts who show him his bad ways. In the movie Scrooge states, "Men's courses will foreshadow certain ends, to which, if preserved in, they must lead. But if the courses be departed from, the ends will change. Say it thus with what you show. " This means what you do or have done affects the future.
Ebenezer Scrooge is a bitter old miser, and miserable, Scrooge dislikes things like happiness, generosity, and Christmas, until three of Ghosts shows him the error of his ways. Scrooge keeps his office very cold, the person that works for him has a little fire going and has multiply jackets to keep him warm. Scrooge at the beginning was described as cold man with no facial expressions who shared little and hung onto every cent. He kept to himself, had no friends, and attended no social events.
