Scrooge's Greed In 'A Christmas Carol'

Stave 1- Greed The main theme in stave 1 of A Christmas Carol is greed. The reason I think Scrooge is very greedy is because he doesn’t like to give and is usually self absorbed. Scrooge is also a very demanding man, he only wants the answer that he likes best. He doesn’t like happy things and his word choices are usually sad. On page 8 Scrooge was being very rude. On page 8 the people asked a question politely, but Scrooge answered impolitely. When Scrooge disagrees or hears false talk, he says Humbug, which means deceptive or false talk or behavior.

The ghost took Scrooge into the Cratchit's home and Scrooge was confused because he thought the more money you have the happier the Christmas. Scrooge then realized Christmas isn’t all about money, but family.

Stave 4-Fear The main idea in stave 4 is fear. The ghost of Christmas past takes Scrooge to the future, he experiences heartbreak. Fear definitely takes place in this story because Scrooge experienced details he didn’t want to know. Scrooge went to the Cratchit’s home and only to find Timmy had died. Scrooge grieved over Timmy and felt miserable for the family. The ghost took Scrooge to his grave. Scrooge pleaded for forgiveness because he knew all the horrible things he had done.

Stave 5-Surprise The main idea of stave 5 was surprise. At the beginning of the story, Scrooge wakes up and it was Christmas morning. Scrooge asks a boy to get him the biggest turkey, Scrooge offered half a crown to the boy. Scrooge was being very kind as a surprise. Scrooge then asked someone to deliver it and he asked to keep it anonymous. The Cratchit family was very pleased and surprised by the turkey. Scrooge then visited his nephew and his new wife. At first they were not pleased to see him. After some time, Scrooge seemed actually nice to the couple. When Bob Cratchit came to work he was 18 minutes late. Scrooge had acted like he was very upset, but he was playing a joke.
