As parents raise their children, they teach them to always tell the truth. But do people always want to know the truth? In the play Oedipus the King by Sophocles, Oedipus shows his ignorance to the truth for most of the play. Only at the end does he decided to pursue it. In Minority Report by Steven Spielberg, John lived by catching future murderers.
Being a king that brought a country to success while still caring for the people’s best interest is what makes Oedipus loved. He has more than a few great qualities such as being smart enough to figure out the Sphinx’s riddle, Courageous enough to fight the Sphinx, unselfish enough to leave his home town to save who he thought his parents were, and more, but his best quality is his honesty. Oedipus lets his people know what he knows at the beginning and end of the play, which is important in getting people to love and respect you as a leader. Honesty is Oedipus’s best attribute. Being honest is not always easy, but it makes people respect and trust you more.

Truth is Not the Truth in My Eyes Vanissa Tsang When it comes to the root of a problem and the justification of one’s action, the truth is often sought after and be considered as the infallible account. Truth, however, is a knowledge that can be perceived differently by every individual. The truth is the driving force for numerous actions because of its distortion of human emotions and perception. First, truth is used as a justification because of the bias one feels about the matter based on their emotions. Both Aeschylus and Sophocles’ characters feel blinding emotions such as anger, betrayal, and despair.
Having been given many hints in his life, Oedipus cannot detect and know the truth. He is blind, to the extent that he could not even understand his life and does not even want to accept his origin. In this way, we get to know the contrast between eyesight and insight (Calame, 1996). After Oedipus realizing and coming to know the truth, he gets out his eyes so as to have the vision (Calame, 1996). He removes his eyes so as not to see his children and siblings who would remind him of his actions.
In the beginning Oedipus know very little, he came from corinth to thebes like a stranger he doesn't know the mess he is in and the mess about to occur. Other people know, and hide the truth from oedipus. Oedipus has killed his father, saved thebes from the sphinx and its riddle, and become king. The citizens believe that solving the Sphinx’s riddle makes Oedipus wise.
Everyone is blind to something, whether it is intentional or not. Oedipus the King, written around 430 BC by playwright Sophocles, illustrates how everyone is blind to something; people who are physically blind can sometimes see the truth better than people who can see the physical world. Oedipus chooses to be blind to what he doesn't want to hear because his power makes him hubris and blind to the truth. Tiresias tells Oedipus "that the murderer you seek is yourself" (episode 1) but Oedipus doesn't want to believe it. Oedipus heard a prophecy that he was going to kill his father and sleep with his mother, Oedipus doesn't believe Tiresias because he believes that his parents are in Corinth.
As Oedipus becomes the first to solve the riddle and defeat the Sphinx, he also saves the town of Thebes and is offered a marriage to the newly widowed Queen Jocasta in gratitude. Years later, at the opening of the play, the gods have brought a plague upon Thebes. The citizens look toward their former saviour for help, not knowing that the solution to this problem will eventually end in their king’s
Introduction The story of Oedipus the king is gloomy, yet captivating. Going from a child bond around the feet and abandon by the mountainside, to marrying his mother, his story is intriguing. In search of the truth about the prophecy and putting an end to a plague Oedipus, search for king Laius’s killer, did somethings inadvertently, making him a tragic hero. His search for truth in the death of Laius the king, as well as his birth led to the ultimate destruction and downfall of his life.
Oedipus the King is one of the most ironic plays ever written. Sophocles, the author, is a famous philosopher of the ancient times The Play is about Oedipus, the king of Thebes, who kills his father and marries his mother. An oracle warned Laius, the king of Thebes prior to Oedipus, that his son would murder him. Accordingly, when his wife, Jocasta, had a son, he exposed the baby by first pinning his ankles together. The infant, who was adopted by King Polybus of Corinth and his wife was then brought up as their very own.
The Queen, Jacosta, Oedipus’ wife tells him not to believe in the prophet, because they’ve been wrong before, she then tells Oedipus about how she and King Laius had a son who was prophesied to kill Laius and sleep with her but since the child was supposedly dead the prophecy couldn’t be true. Oedipus becomes a bit weary because as a child an old man told him he was adopted and that one day he’d kill his real father and sleep with his mother, Oedipus did also kill a man at a crossroads which sounded like the way Laius died. Oedipus continued questioning the messenger and found out that he was the man everyone spoke of and Jacosta then comes to the realization that Oedipus is her son and kills herself.
In ancient Greek society, the tragedy was a deeply spiritual and emotional art form integral to daily life. Perhaps one of the best examples of Greek tragedy is Sophocles’ Oedipus the King. The work is distinguished by the deep emotion and thought it elicits from the reader. This is in part due to Sophocles’ expert portrayal of Oedipus, who bears all the attributes of an Aristotelian tragic hero. A once powerful king turned blinded pariah, Oedipus is characterized by both his pride and his honorable character.
