Flush by Carl Hiassen is a young adult realistic fiction novel written in 2005, that focuses on Noah, the main character, trying to search for the truth and expose Dusty Muleman, the antagonist, of his illegal actions. The setting is mostly in the Underwood’s household, the jail that Noah’s dad was sent to, and the Coral Queen, or the gambling boat that Noah’s dad sank. Noah’s dad, Paine Underwood, sank Dusty’s casino boat, and his dad was put in jail. Noah finds out that Dusty is pouring human waste into the ocean water, which flows into Thunder beach and gets the people and marine animals really sick, so Noah is trying to expose Dusty, in order to bail his dad out and prove that Dusty is the real criminal. Unfortunately, Lice Peeking disappears, and everyone thinks he died. Then, Noah had to find another solution to uncovering Dusty. While Noah’s dad is in jail, he gets interviewed about his dad’s criminal history and his actions. Paine also gets interviewed by multiple TV channels about the Coral Queen, or the boat he had sunken. Soon after, Paine figures out how to escape jail, and comes home. The police find him, however, they put him on house arrest instead of taking him back. Noah and Abbey both get into a fight with Jasper Muleman, Dusty’s son, and Bull, Jasper’s friend. They get saved by a mysterious old man, who even knows their names, and soon turned out to be their grandfather. Noah and Abbey get an idea of pouring fuchsia dye down the toilets of the Coral Queen as a plan to expose Dusty Muleman, and name it Operation Royal Flush. Soon after, Dusty gets busted, and gets sent to prison, however, the casino boat is still in business, and he soon gets released after paying a light fine. It connects to the theme because Noah and Paine try to find out the truth about what Dusty Muleman is doing, and want to expose him because he is polluting Thunder Beach. Both Noah and Paine stood up for what they believed was right and searched for the truth about Dusty Muleman and exposed his illegal actions. Polluting the beach also caused many people to be really sick, which is an effect that ocean pollution has on humans, which is why ocean pollution should be stopped. In the book, the author displays the theme by creating situations where you have to search and believe what you trust in. In the beginning of the book, Noah’s father sank the boat, because of what he believed was right. He sank the boat because he believed that Dusty Muleman’s actions were wrong, he sank it so that Dusty Muleman would hopefully stop pouring waste into the ocean basin, contaminating Thunder Beach, hurting people and animals. Towards the middle to end of the book, Noah and Abbey, like their father, believe what Dusty is doing is wrong, so he sneaks aboard the boat and tries to expose Dusty using bottles of dye, despite the possible consequences they could both
