About Seaside Located only 80 miles from Portland, the historic community of Seaside is brimming with lovely oceanfront resorts, exciting attractions, and memorable seaside vistas. Each year, thousands of visitors are attracted to the beautiful town for the ocean side ambiance and the millions of razor clams produced by the unique gradual slope and broad sandy beaches found at Clatsop Spit. Incorporated in 1899, the town of Seaside has long been one of the most popular oceanfront communities located along Oregon 's Pacific Coast. The small town boasts a residential population of approximately 6,445 but can swell in size during the summer season. The area that the town occupies has long been the site of oceanfront villages. Originally the site of a Native American Clatsop Village known as Necotat, the area of Seaside was discovered by Lewis and Clark on their notorious westward expedition. Lewis and Clark established a base for their expeditions approximately 15 miles north of where Seaside stands today. Shortly after Lewis and Clark returned from their successful expedition, settlers made their way into the northwestern reaches of the country 's Pacific Coast. Fur trading, trapping, fishing, and logging became popular in the region, and in 1811 Fort Astoria was established in the region. By the 1820s settlers began arriving in the area to make claims on the land. Additionally, people made their way to the Pacific Coast to experience the stunning beauty of the Oregon Coast.
