The area that the town occupies has long been the site of oceanfront villages. Originally the site of a Native American Clatsop Village known as Necotat, the area of Seaside was discovered by Lewis and Clark on their notorious westward expedition. Lewis and Clark established a base for their expeditions approximately 15 miles north of where Seaside stands today. Shortly after Lewis and Clark returned from their successful expedition, settlers made their way into the northwestern reaches of the country 's Pacific Coast. Fur trading, trapping, fishing, and logging became popular in the region, and in 1811 Fort Astoria was established in the region.
