In Alan Dawley’s, “Class and Community”, Dawley portrays the transformation of Lynn, Massachusetts through the depiction of shoemakers and how the Industrial Revolution shaped their community’s overall way of life, and how a simple town of artisans became an epicenter for a nation the was becoming an industrial powerhouse. “Equal Rights” and community went together in Lynn as they both demand respectability and living up to certain standards. Before the central shop, most any land or building was a means of production, but once they came into the picture, they became the symbol for production. The pursuit of “equal rights” in Lynn made them a “microcosm of the industrial revolution” because everyone was fighting for the same cause, not just men, but both sexes. The treatment of the employees by factory owners was so unjust that people set aside other problems and struggles and came together under one cause, to fight something bigger than themselves.

The Trobriand Islanders are a civilization of people that live on the Trobriand Islands, mainly on the islands of Kiriwina, Kaileuna, Kitava, and Vakuta, which are located off the East tip of Papua New Guinea in the Solomon Sea. The Trobriand Islanders are a unique matrilineal society. Matrilineal means tracing descent through the mother’s line. The family on the mother’s side is closer to the child than the father and his side. So, in a matrilineal society, when a child is born, their uncle is the male authority of their lives because the uncle has the same genealogy as the mother while the father doesn’t, but the father and his side are still a part of the child’s kinship.

I read a book called The Selection. It’s about a place called Illéa and there everyone is categorized by a caste, a number one through ten, which signifies how poor or rich you are. At the very top, which is number one, is the royal family which consists of the King, Queen, and Prince whose name is Maxon. If you are a one through four you’re able to live comfortably, but if you’re a five through ten you tend to have a harder time making money and getting food on the table for your family. The only way you can become a one is if you marry into the royal family and that’s when the selection comes in.
The Ming Tombs and The Qing Tombs built by ancient Chinese emperors are an assemblage of imperial mausoleums. The Ming Tombs are located in China, in both Nanjing and Beijing. Most of the tombs are located specifically in Changping District of Bejing. This location was chosen by the third emperor of the Ming dynasty, the Yongle Emperor, who based his choice on the principles of Geomancy or also known as Feng Shui, which is a traditional Chinese philosophical system that has the intention of harmonizing everyone with the environment.
Bill Bryson’s essay “How You Became You” gives a brief yet entertaining narrative of the unlikeliness of the creation of the human race in order to educate the common man on the miracle of life. The rhetorical strategies used within the essay successfully allow the purpose of this piece to become accessible to the general public. Bryson seamlessly interweaves elements of tone, diction, and rhetorical appeals to ultimately create a piece that successfully achieves his purpose and leaves a lasting impact on the audience, the general populace. The tone of “How You Became You” plays an important role in the effectiveness of the essay.
Edgar could be considered to be a vicitim of social injustice with respect to his relations with three leading characters of the novel - William Ashton, Lucy Ashton and the Marquis of A. Among them, Sir William Ashton and the Marquis of A are both political opportunists. Though Ashton is a Whig and Marquis is a Tory, “… they have in common a cynical tendency to adjust ideological principles to the prevailing political winds that documents, within the historical assumptions of the novel, the assault on factionalism. 15 The Marquis takes a keen interest in Edgar’s quarrel with the Ashtons over the Ravenswood estate in order to gain political support from Sir William Ashton. Sir William, on the other hand tries to be friendly with Edgar so that he can extricate political benefit in case the Marquis and his fellow Tories win their struggle for power.

Is there really a need to be married anymore? Does marriage actually benefit your relationship, or is it an outdated institution that we’ll be better off without? In this speech, I’ll convince you that marriage is a thing of the past, and that society’s views on marriage have changed enough in the past decade that marriage really isn’t necessary anymore. One of the main purposes of marriage is to maintain a permanent relationship, but nowadays marriage doesn’t lead to a permanent relationship due to the increase of divorce rates.
Carl Degler argues that the popular literature regarding marriage and sexuality do not create an accurate portrait of the actual sexual tendencies of 19th century women. The publications created by William Acton suggest that women are naturally devoid of sexual desire and healthy women might only feel some desire during menstruation. Furthermore, he noted that unlike men who were habitually bound to experience the temptation of sex, women who felt the same were unnatural exceptions. Although, as Degler points out, many medical writers of the time were not concerned with disseminating facts and instead intended to set the sexual doctrine for the era. As a result, the writings of those like Acton are not representations of the feelings of women
According to this theory, nature of love is changing fundamentally and it can create either opportunities for democracy or chaos in life (Beck & Beck- Gernsheim, 1995). Love, family and personal freedom are three key elements in this theory. This theory states that the guidelines, rules and traditions which used to rule personal relationships have changed. “Individuals are now confronted with an endless series of choices as part of constructing, adjusting, improving or dissolving the unions they form with others” (Giddens, 2006). For instance, marriage nowadays depends on the willingness of the couples rather than for economic purposes or the urge to form family.
