In this paper there has been a discussion of the legislation and the tensions preceding the southern Secession. Based on this discussing it can be concluded that the tensions, which culminated with the Civil War, were present many decades before the secession itself. Even threats of Civil war and secession were present much prior to this particular conflict. This paper has also concluded that the threat of Lincoln was real to the South, because of the Republican party’s very distinct foundation as an anti-slavery party. Slavery was a soft spot in the South because of the substantial value slaves had.
What was the most important war in Texas history? The Civil War. In the U.S., during the 1850’s with the north and south, the Civil War happened with the texans. So, why did Texans fight?
In conclusion, the secession of the eleven states was not very successful. As we know today, there are fifty states in America, one of which is Texas. There were many outcomes to this decision, and not all benefited Texas. When the Civil War ended the North came out as the victor. After this the North set forth many plans to allow Texas back into the Union, however some were too easy and others too difficult for the South to accept.
The first reason Texans fought for the Confederacy in the Civil War was for states rights. An editorial in the Texas State Gazette says that a state cannot be forced to stay in or leave the Union. Since this was in the Texas State Gazette, this most likely was a very popular opinion of Texans. Also, in Document C it says that Abraham Lincoln didn’t think you could lawfully get out of the Union. It says in the background
He made it very clear that secession was illegal and was a rejection of democracy. He much rather preferred the South to be reentered into the Union and reassured the Southerners that the slavery institution was safe. In the beginning, he wanted to take conservative steps and opted to send supplies to Fort Sumter and Fort Pickens. Unfortunately, this caused panic for the Southerners and they attacked. Lincoln was not too focused on the war, but after Bull Run he devised a stronger plan to win the war.
Political parties were splitting along North and South lines and even violence was becoming an issue in congress itself. Before the election of 1860, Southerners had already agreed that if a republican wins the election, they would leave the Union. As it came to be, Lincoln, a republican, was elected and the south truly did leave the Union. During the four months, before President Lincoln's inauguration, President James Buchanan did nothing to stop the secession. It may be even concluded that he was sympathetic to the Southern cause.
There were many important Compromises between the years of 1820 and 1860, some that worked completely and some that didn’t. In the early nineteenth century, people were good at compromising and making things work for everyone. How long did perfect compromising actually last? Slavery began to split the nation apart, causing compromising to become hard to do.
The Origin and Development of the Texas Constitution Texas has a vastly rich history in which Texas has had to adopt six different constitutions. Though a surprising amount of constitutions, Texas has not had significant variations among the six documented constitutions. In fact, the constitution that Texas uses today has lasted for more than a hundred and thirty years. Despite that little fact, there has been continuous efforts to amend the constitution to better keep up with what is best for the people and the state.
This lasted until Texas succeeded from the union in 1861. In 1861 before the Civil War, the constitution was revised again. This time it kept most of the constitution of 1845 but made many changes to align Texas with the Confederacy. The constitution gave greater protection to slavery, and destroyed any two party system for Texas.
‘Slavery was the root cause of secession’. ‘November 6 1860, Lincoln was elected president of America which resulted in panic emerging in the South’ . The election of Lincoln as president who was a Republican leader meant that ideologies, movements and values from the North would be implemented in the South which meant the abolition of slavery. Slavery was a huge characteristic of the South as the economy; politics; social status and psychological mind-sets were influenced by the process of slavery. The southern white population then derived the idea of secession which meant the South would gain independence from Northern aggression .
Constitution and altered it by explicitly protecting the institution of slavery. This peculiar institution was what made the Confederacy unique. Sectionalism over economic, social, political, and constitutional issues regarding slavery continued from Buchanan’s inauguration in 1857 until secession after Lincoln’s election in 1860. “The expansion of slavery into western territories provided the catalyst for the growing perceptions of northerners and southerners that they held different intentions of the republic’s future.” “In the South, loyalty to slavery and its required expansion became the hallmark of party politics as the region’s politicians—Whigs, Know-Nothing, and Democrat—competed to demonstrate their loyalty to southern rights.”
Reconstruction in Texas Hits Reconstruction in Texas was never known until after the Civil War. This Civil War left many in debt, and those who opposed secession from the Union were treated horribly during the war. This called for revenge. During the time Former President Abrham Lincoln was in charge and he was a man with a plan. He wanted to restore the Union as quickly as possible.
In the year of 1860, Abraham Lincoln won the Republican Party nomination and the presidential nomination competing against Stephen A. Douglass. Abraham Lincoln delivers his first inaugural address on March 24, 1861. Lincoln becomes the sixteenth President of the United States. Soon after Lincoln won the presidency in 1860, seven Southern states announced their secession from the Union, and formed what is known as the confederacy. The confederacy was composed strictly by slave states such as South Carolina, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, among others.
Ten years prior to Lincoln’s inauguration California stand on slavery was being determined. Tennessee delegates met in Nashville to determine what would happen if California became a free state, and the topic of secession was on the table. However, after the Compromise of 1850, which implemented the Fugitive Slave Act, that required all runaway slaves be returned to their masters even if they are in a free state, like California, Tennessee and the other southern states threatening to secede from the Union were slated. Then ten years later when the democrat Abraham Lincoln was elected president it pushed many states over the edge and state began to secede. However, Tennessee’s divided regions kept it from seceding in the beginning of this civil
Texas is the second most populated and second largest state in United State. Due to its size, Texas contains diverse landscapes that resemble both American South and Southwest. Most of the population centers are located in areas of formers prairies, grass lands, forests, and the coastline. The current Texas Constitution was adopted in 1876. Like most of the states, it also provides for a separation off power.
