The crusades were Christian military that fought against the Middle East with the idea to recover the Holy lands. The power of the church was at its height and the leaders of the church were ready to spread the Christian religion to other nations, such as Jerusalem. The Christians forced their way into the Near East to capture Jerusalem, Syria, Iraq and Palestine. These crusaders were excited to spread their language of theology; the greatest miracle since the Resurrection; for another a new way of salvation, almost a renewal of God’s covenant with His people. Things were not as easy for the rest of the Crusades. After the First Crusade, there was three crusader states that were established in the East: the Kingdom of Jerusalem, the Principality of Antioch and the County of Edessa. The Second Crusades started because of the fall of the County of Edessa. The County of Edessa was the most northerly of the rest and also the weakest and the least populated. It was in the surrounding of attacks from the Muslims and Turks. Edessa was left with no powerful allies. The Second Crusades was considered a more organized crusades, but was not considered a people’s crusades. It was considered a military crusades that had 30,000 elite lords and knights. The Second Crusade’s siege of Damascus was lifted by the reinforcements in the cities around Damascus because of the dramatic change when it was compared to siege in Jerusalem. Leading to the third crusades, Saladin was the leader who believe in the leadership of one man. There was threatening towards the Muslim’s defense of the Holy Land. The Third crusade was not successful because of the loss in Jerusalem itself. The Egyptians, who had themselves conquered Jerusalem from the Turks in 1098, lasted for only two years before collapsing only a few weeks before the westerners reached the Holy City. Saladin lost control over Jerusalem because of the Egyptians. The Battle of Hattin occurred in 1187. Saladin had to fight Egypt in order to properly take on Jerusalem again. He needed to be able to get his Holy City back under his control. By the Fourth crusades in 1204, Saladin was already killed by the Christians and the Christians are in Constantinople.
