I am thrilled to apply for the position of Section Leader for the HHS Marching Hawks because I am very passionate about our Colorguard and dedicated to helping my peers succeed. Over the 6 seasons that I have been inside a Colorguard, I have been able to work alongside some of the most passionate and hardworking section leaders and witnessed the impact a leader can have on the group dynamic and our entire season. I want to be a section leader this year because I want to be able to see the kind of impact I can make for a more positive and inclusive environment for each member.

I think that a really good way to push this is if we set the standards throughout the entire team, not just within the new people, but the people who are returning that might set bad standards for the team that influence the way people come to rehearsal every day. If we have people coming to guard every day that is not motivated and setting a bad mood it influences people around them to do the same and it creates bad habits and routines for everyone else especially people who don’t know what being in a guard or a marching band is all about. Ways that we have done this in the past is cheering on our fellow peers but I think we can take it a step further by showcasing some of their skills so that other people can seek motivation from their peers and gain more confidence so they can put their full selves into their show.

Another effective way that has been implemented in the guard but not enforced or peer motivated as much is practice at home through homework. I think that this is another good way for people to start thinking about guard more than just inside the rehearsal time as well as self-evaluation so that they can correct themselves more often as well. With some of these small steps, I think that we can seek better organization for our band this upcoming season that can ensure a more successful team.

I think that what makes a good leader is to set apart from just being an outstanding member but taking on a new kind of responsibility as an outstanding leader. Someone that never fails to amaze me with various outstanding leadership qualities is Evan Willams. This is because of his avid contributions to the team on every level that goes beyond just the requirements of a leader but within the true passion of his sport.
