In the article " The Women Of Hidden Figures". By jessica McBirney, the women of color who worked as "computers" for NACA are highlighted. Specifically, the text gave the reader a glimpse of theses ladies past. The author explained the trials and tribulations of getting an education as a black woman. Because of the harsh discrimination on their gender and race.
The film Girl’s Trip has been applauded for being a celebration of blackness in the primarily white film industry. The majority of the cast and the writers for Girl’s Trip are people of color. The film was much more successful than its “white counterpart” Rough Night in box office revenue and reviews. However, most of the black characters in Girl’s Trip shift through various controlling images throughout the movie. The reason these stereotypes are less obvious than they are in some other films is because each characters portrays multiple stereotypes and different times throughout the film.
For example, sanitation workers had to carry bags of garbage that had holes in them and since they were paid low wages, they ended up poor on welfare. Not only was this film was a way of seeing another turning point during the civil rights movement but also, African Americans fighting for justice. This is significant because the filmmaker shows when and why Black History Month began and why it was important. He goes into detail about Carter G. Woodson, the man behind Negro Week, who fought his whole life for recognition of African-Americans. The filmmaker also talks about how President Nixon expanded Negro Week into Black History Month.
Hidden Figures is a film that tells the story of three African American women who played essential roles at NASA during the 1960s. Katherine, the main character, is a scientist at NASA working to do the math required to launch a rocket into space. She struggles because as an African American woman trying to get people to give her the respect she deserves. Many scenes show the hardships that she had to go through in order through a normal day. This essay will be exploring three main communication concepts found in the film:
The theme of segregation is of significant importance in the novel the Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd, the films Selma by Ava DuVernay, The Help by Tate Taylor, and the documentary Crips and Bloods: Made in America by Stacey Peralta. I chose this theme as it plays an important role in all texts and greatly contributes to the main problems and situations in each. Although the Civil Rights Act supposedly ended all state and local laws requiring segregation the year before the film was set in 1964, there are still many cases of it seen in Selma, such as restaurants that solely serve white people or not allowing black people to vote. Having class is important because you could come from nothing and become something in a matter of time. For instance, Dorothy strived so hard to attain the position of supervisor since she was already doing the work of a supervisor but wasn’t getting the same amount of a supervisor because she was an African American. Later in the film, Dorothy subsequently got what she asked. She received the position as a supervisor and got the same pay as a supervisor. In conclusion, at the time when the film Hidden Figures was filmed it had elements of racism, sexism, and class (economic standards) which was a prime example of intersectionality and how the women were treated on a daily basis.
In life we all are a secretive about certain parts of ourselves. For example, if someone is around new people they might not share many things about them with other people. This applies to many stories in literature as well, because new characters keep many secrets that are generally not revealed to other characters. This secretiveness can also symbolize many things in the life around the characters. In the book Behind a Mask; or, a Woman’s Power, author Louisa May Alcott demonstrates this aspect of literature through Jean Muir while symbolizing parts of the Victorian society around them.
Secrets provide many different kind of feelings amongst people. Tim O’Brien believes they are essential to humans. Whenever a piece of information is hidden, people instantly want to know that concealed information. It simply draws people in and makes them emotional.
The African Americans were targeted and vulnerable due to the color of their skin. This is unfairness. In the movie, not only were the men treated unequally but also Nurse Evers was. She was used by the government to help conduct the experiment due to the color of her skin. They knew that she would be able to easily mislead these men into believing they were going to receive good health although the complete opposite occurred.
Hidden Figures is an inordinate movie that gives us the lesson that everybody has the potential to do great things if they work hard towards those things. In this movie, an exceptional girl named Katherine is given the chance to go to an extraordinary school so that she can get the education that she needs to fulfill her dream and become an engineer at NASA. The movie showcases the struggles, hard-work, and discrimination that she has to go through while working at NASA. Although some examples of racism are more easily noticeable than others in the movie, all of them show that many Americans did not particularly approve of African-Americans in the mid-1900s.
The movie clearly exposes the many ways that the human dignity of African- American maids was ignored. They had suffered daily embarrassment but were able to claim their own way dignity. The film described about empowerment of individuals as well as about social justice for a group. It is a moving story depicting dehumanization in a racist culture but also the ability to move beyond the unjust structures of society and to declare the value of every human being.
Black women are treated less than because of their ascribed traits, their gender and race, and are often dehumanized and belittled throughout the movie. They are treated like slaves and are seen as easily disposable. There are several moments throughout the film that show the racial, gender, and class inequalities. These moments also show exploitation and opportunity hoarding. The Help also explains historical context of the inequality that occurred during that time period.
The movie Hidden Figures by Theodore Melfi is talking about the civil rights and equality of men and women in 1970 's to 1990’s. The Mise-en-scene means "setting up a scene. " There are six elements that make up mise-en-scene acting, costume and make-up, setting, lighting, composition or space and lastly. In Hidden Figures, the mise-en-scene helps audiences to become closer to the story and have the same feeling as those main characters. The director uses many different kind of shout angles to show the unbalanced between black people and white people at that time and the color and lighting also help the director can present the emotions that the characters are facing different kind of events or people.
