Society has gone through various changes over time, including the way different cultures interact with each other. Despite some imperfections, we have come a long way from the times of slavery back in the 18th century. The movie “Remember the Titans” portrays how racial segregation can make people distrustful of different cultures and ethnicities. Set in 1971 Virginia, the movie takes place during a time where strong grudges between different ethnicities made it extremely difficult for both Black and White Americans to coexist.

After an arduous effort, a spark of hope for success appears in between the teammates. The film demonstrates how intentional segregation from other cultures can create a barrier between them, leading to lack of trust, hate, and disapproval towards other cultures. Coach Boone explains to his players, the meaning of respect and professionalism; in this scene he states, “If we don’t come together right now on this hallowed ground, we too will be destroyed, just like they were. I don’t care if you like each other, but you will respect each other.” The quote highlights the significance of respect as without it, uncontrolled hatred can only bring grave consequences to all parties involved. Upon returnal to their hometown, it is up to these young kids to pass onto the community, their new acquired knowledge and respect towards other cultures. Herman Boone explains to his players, “I don’t care if you’re black, white, green, blue or orange. I want all of my defensive players on the same damn page! Got it?” The quote highlights the importance of unity and equality among team members, regardless of their race or background. It emphasizes the need to address and dismantle systematic racism to promote equality and justice for all individuals regardless of their race. The unequal distribution of resources and opportunities based on race perpetuates social and economic disparities and reinforces discriminatory attitudes and practices amongst the community.
