In the 1950’s through the 1960’s if one was an African-American one would have to walk three to four miles in the scorching heat to go to their all black school. Jim Crow laws were designed to segregate African-Americans and whites. Before, May 17.1954, the court would use the phrase “separate but equal” to justify excluding blacks from white facilities and services. In one Supreme Court case called Brown vs. the Board of Education of Topeka, the Chief Justice and the other eight Associate Justices on the Supreme Court ruled that all U.S. schools had to integrate. Some schools integrated while other schools did not.
What is the purpose and mission of universal schooling? Why are philanthropic white Northern reformers’ supportive of African-Americans’ goals of literacy and universal education? How can historians reconcile the educational advancement of African-Americans with their status as second-class citizens throughout the Eras of Reconstruction and Jim Crow? Anderson challenges the prevailing narrative that universal public education emerged from white Northern missionaries dedicated to civilizing newly emancipated Negroes in the South.

In the book, The Troubled Crusade: American Education 1945-1980 by Diane Ravitch it shows the fight to have equality in education especially in the chapters of Race and Education: The Brown Decision and Race and Education: Social Science and Law. Ravitch shows the injustice in which blacks were treated and the segregated system seemed impossible to escape, especially in the South. Ravitch shows the change in the idea of “color-blindness” (that all are equal despite race, religion, color, etc.) and how that was the goal until the pursuit for “color-blindness” was considered to be “racism in a new form” (p. 114). Teachers would first have to address the topic of segregation that started back in 1896 and the system of Jim Crow Laws, who they were and what was their purpose. In addition, teachers would also have to address the topic of race and what is meant by it. The Rhetorical situation in the essay “Still Separate, Still Unequal: America’s Educational Apartheid” by Jonathan Kozol happens to be the differences in school systems by ethnicity rates. It is interpreted by the speaker that minority races are shown by the government they are not equally important because they have a lack of funding, old school buildings, and only are introduced to the races they see every day unlike the white schools who are introduced to various ethnic groups. The readers would refer to the speaker as passionate about the government making an effort to fix the school
Mary Mcleod once said, “We have a powerful potential in our youth, and we must have the courage to change old ideas and practices so that we may direct their power toward good ends.” This quote comes from a woman whose true intentions were to establish, empower, equate, and implement black education. These were the goals of women educators during the civil rights movement which was during the years of Jim Crow laws. Jim Crow laws were racially segregated laws in the United States ranging from the years of 1876 to 1965, which is nearly 100 years. “America designed a Jim Crow system of education to deny access for to quality education to Negroes.”
How would an individual feel if their school was integrated? Or had conditions so bad to the point where they can’t focus on their education? Well I’ve been given multiple sources to analyze Detroit Public Schools and schools in the 1950’s to tell you how they dealt with these issues and many others; So, I’ll be comparing and contrasting the two. The segregation of schools based on a students skin color was in place until 1954. On May 17th of that year, during the Supreme Court case of Brown v. Board of Education, it was declared that separate public schools for black and white students was unconstitutional. However, before this, the segregation of schools was a common practice throughout the country. In the 1950s there were many differences in the way that black public schools and white public schools were treated with very few similarities. The differences between the black and white schools encouraged racism which made the amount of discrimination against blacks even greater.
Many people always speak of how today’s world is complex and convoluted, as if it was simple before that particular point. To build a future for one self, they must first know the past to progress. Frederick Douglass wrote a short essay on the Color Line, he does not directly state a definition of the color line, but rather explains the current racial affections, with in depth of the two conflicting races. He speaks on how the white philosophers spoke open and confidently about how the Negro was inferior. The Anglo Saxon had always been prejudice against the opposite race, it was their natural supposedly, but this is not based in science.
Brittney Foster SOCY 423 UMUC 03/01/2018 Racial integration of schools Racial integration is a situation whereby people of all races come together to achieve a common goal and hence making a unified system. Racial integration of schools is well elaborated in the two articles by Pettigrew and Kirp. These two articles say that combination in the American schools since 1954 has unceremoniously ushered out the Brown versus Board of Education which was a decision made by the Supreme Court. The topic of discussion of these two articles hence is relevant to our course since it gives us the light of how racial desegregation and racial integration shaped America’s history.
