Selena Quintanilla Pèrez was a Mexican-American singer and dancer. She was famous for singing tejano music and was the first female to become popular singing it. Selena has won many awards in her life. Unfortunately, her life was cut short. She was killed by the president of her fan club.
Selena Quintanilla Perez was a Mexican American singer who was born in Lake Jackson Texas. Selena’s life was filled with music and dancing along with the love from her friends and family. Unfortunately Selena was killed by her fan club manager at the age of 23. Although Selena has died, she still lives on and has impacted people's lives throughout the years. Selena Quintanilla was born on April 16, 1971.

Unfortunately her career was cut short by the president of her own fan club, Yolanda Saldívar. Saldívar had been embezzling money submitted by member and of the fan club as well as financial profit from Selena's clothing store.
It shows the challenges they face and how hard life in america can be when you didn't grow up here. America is a very confusing place and many of these immigrants don't even know how to speak english when they arrive here. One of the biggest challenges they have is finding a good paying job. Most of them don't have the requirements to get a good paying job so they are forced to take low paying jobs and work a lot to make ends meet. Sometimes they don't have enough money, and they can't afford to eat for a while.
Selena Quintanilla-Perez, a very beautiful legendary singer was born on April 16, 1971 in Lake Jackson, Texas. She was and still is known as one of the best female Spanish/ English singers of all time. She published many albums and won many award for her unique style and her amount of talent , she wrote both Spanish and English albums and generally had fans all over the world. Selena had a very kind personality. She was a loving and friendly person , that truly loved her fans.

Selena graduated from the american school of correspondence and got enrolled at the pacific western university, at the age 17. In 1984, she recorded her first LP record which was the name of the band. The compositions belonged to the Tejano music which was a male dominated genre. Selena Quintanilla is a role model now and when she was alive. She inspires young women and especially young latino women to be the best selves they can be no matter how hard it is. Selena Quintanilla was a Latino singer that rose to fame in 1992 when she finally heard one of her songs on the radio. She also recorded an English album that attracted her many more American fans. Without her family know of this would have been possible.
Writing and signing all her songs selena brought the latino community together through her music. Selena was known to adding her own twist to tex mex (genre) which attracted more latino communities throughout the U.S. to her music. She never let fame or money get in her way on making her music. She realized what she could do and managed to break records. “While she's known for her music, and as admired icon and legend, Selena helped change things for latinos and her influences was felt across the spectrum of everyday life, from Texas politics to fashion and merchandising.”
From the drug cartel and gangs, to the Mexican-American police officers like Officer Zavala and Officer Orozco, who is a policewoman that was once friends with female Curbside gang member, Lala. I loved that film was very much in touch with the Chicano culture, particularly in the scene where they were celebrating the quinceanera of Zavala’s younger sister. The film showed very descriptive features that also represent the Chicano culture, such as the scene where the man in the pickup truck picks up a pot of soup, from the mother of a Curbside gang member. Loud Mexican music is playing from the truck as the man is being apprehended. They soon discover that the pot of soup, or what looked like menudo, was used to hide large amounts of drug money.
“The goal isn’t to live forever, but to create something that will” Selena Quintanilla started her singing career at about the age 8 to help support her family. Selena’s family didn’t have much money to begin with but her father saw her potential. The family business had failed and caused them to go bankrupt. They lost their home and moved in with relatives in Corpus Christi. Since losing the family business there was no income and Selena and her siblings singing was their only income, Selena lost many days of school because of the band and she dropped out after finishing 8th grade.
Selena was an active philanthropist that did many things to help the community. She would visit schools and talked to the students about the importance of education and obtaining a high school diploma, avoiding drugs and alcohol, and the importance of pursuing one’s dreams. In 1993, she gave a free concert to those that improved their grades enormously. In addition, she donated $2,500 to School Programs. She also did a public service video titled “Mi Musica” that was sponsored by Agree Shampoo.
Can you imagine how much courage and strength it takes to fight your way through a world where being a Tejano singer as a woman is unfathomable? Selena Quintanilla did just that, struggling through her hero’s journey fighting sexism, discrimination, and camouflaged betrayal to rise to stardom and persevere, paving a path of hope for the millions of women she inspired and becoming a beacon in the evolution of the female industry. Selena’s Ordinary world was with her family in her hometown of Lake Jackson, Texas right next to Houston where she was born on April 16, 1971 to her parents, Abraham Jr. and Marcella Quintanilla (“Selena Biography - life, family, children, parents, story, death, school, old, information, born, movie”). In Selena, it is clear that the American dream being represented was that of the Latinos. By showing the contrast between Abraham’s failure as a musician in the early 1960s and Selena’s overwhelming success in the early 1990s the film essentially perpetuates Selena’s image as an emblem of hope to those in search of the American dream. As Selena is a third generation Mexican-American it would make sense that the American dream being represented was that of Mexican-Americans. However, because Selena’s story is told from a U.S. assimilationist perspective the success of Selena is instead associated with Latino’s version of the American dream. Even though her life was cut short she continues to live in the hearts of Latino and American community. Selena is a pop icon that has influence me and others because she broke a lot of barriers and had a major impact on the Latino community.
