Known mononymously as Selena, Selena Quintanilla Perez was an American Tejano singer. Her contributions to music and fashion, which made her one of the most celebrated Mexican-American artists of the late 20th century, led to her being called the “Queen of Tejano Music.” She remains one of the most influential Latin artists of all time and is credited for catapulting the Tejano genre into the popular mainstream. Selena Quintanilla broke many barriers, first as the leader of Selena y los Dinos where she expanded traditional Tejano music by adding non-traditional instruments and music genres including cumbia, pop, rock, and disco, and she ultimately made history by becoming the first ever Tejano artist to win a Grammy in 1994.
