Selena was born into a musical family in Lake Jackson, Texas on April 16, 1971. Selena’s father Abraham Quintanilla was also a musician, and got her started on singing at age of 10. At the beginning of Selena’s career she was the lead singer of her family band called, “Selena y Los Dinos”. Selena originally sang in English but learned to sing in Spanish to reach out to the Latin community as well. Selena’s genre of music is called “Tejano”. Tejano music is a mixture of both Mexican music and other styles such as country. In order to focus more on her music career she was removed from public school in eighth grade and was homeschooled until she was seventeen. When Selena was fourteen years old she recorded her first album in 1985 with the band. This first album was released in 1995 and known as, Miss Primeras Grabaciones. Selena had released six more albums over the next three years, and was a ragging success. Selena attended the Tejano music awards in 1987, where she received the award for Best Female Vocalist. This also led to Selena getting signed to a record deal with EMI Latin (now known as Capitol Latin). At the 36th Grammy Awards Selena won Best Mexican-American Album for her album “Selena live!” Soon after, her next album “Amor Prohibido” was nominated for the same Grammy Award. The band was at their best outbreak in the music industry! Selena had won best Latin Artist and Song of the Year.
