Self acceptance is a battle in which most individuals in the twenty first century struggle with, day to day. Although one may believe that someone with phenomenal health would have a better understanding of self acceptance, often it is those nearing death or struggling with a terminal illness who can teach us the importance of loving ourselves and living life to the fullest. In the memoir Tuesdays with morrie, Mitch Albom writes about his experiences with his old professor Morrie who is facing a battle with ALS; However, it is not written to reflect on mitch’s life, but to raise awareness to Morrie and how he faced his situation. In fact, what most do not realize is that once we as humans can find it in ourselves to detach those insecurities and emotions from our troubles, it is easier to be at peace with the misfortunes being thrown our way. In the memoir, Morrie expresses this same thought to mitch as he is close to death. “Mitch, it was the most incredible feeling. The sensation of accepting what was happening, being at peace.” Take morrie, a man who has lost everything he had grown to be, but could still face each day feeling gratified, which is not only remarkable but truly inspiring to any person, one in particular being Mitch. Throughout the memoir, Mitch reflects on all the lessons in which Morrie taught him, but the main purpose of his lessons, was to remind Mitch to accept the person he was from day one and to take those lessons and share them with the rest of the world.

The last thing someone should ever have to do is profess to be someone in which they are not, especially to those who know them best. A key element to self acceptance, is surrounding yourself with the people who love and accept you for who you truly are and that keep you well grounded. Not only is it Morrie that teaches
