In the excerpt from “The Tell-Tale Heart”, Edgar Allan Poe creates the guilty character of an unnamed narrator through indirect characterization. Using the components of actions, dialogue, and behavior, Poe depicts a story about self-control and reveals that humans can manipulate how they express themselves and portray an image of innocence. The unnamed character controlled himself so well, the officers didn’t really suspect him of the murder, even though the victim was right beneath the floorboards.
