In the novel The Color Purple by Alice Walker, uses pages 282-283 to illtrate the theme of self discovery. In the commencement of the passage, Mr.______ and Celie are in the midst of a conversation about the world around them. Mr. _______ begins to tell Celie about how his is beginning to question his past actions, and begins his road to self discovery. He mentions “You ast yourself one, it lead to fifteen.” A hyperbole used to illustrate the start of self discovery among Mr. _______. He is not wondering why people feel pain, but why people place on themselves and others.Illustrating how Mr. ______ is beginning to recognize and respect the people around him. Which is why Mr. ____ use the paradox “why us black”. Not to ask why his has dark skin, but why he is treated differently because of his skin color. Showcasing his gain in understanding of the racism in the world around him, and the place it puts him in the world. The first problem Mr._____ had identified from the people around him, and how it has created internal suffering among his character. Another problem Mr._____ has recognized is self pride. This is shown in final question before Celie speaks, “you black or a man or a woman or a bush it doesn 't mean nothing if you don’t ask yourself why you are here.” The metaphor Mr. ______ has recognized that self-pride can cover-up self worth, and how the two aren’t related. Celie begins to show a self realization when she talk about Shug. When Celie writes “And then, just when I know I can live content without Shug.” A metaphor how Celie had learned from their conversation, you don’t need love an other to be happy. Throughout the novel Celie expresses a love for Shug, a different emotion that she has felt compared to anyone else. A love that gave her hope and confidence to live her life. Celie realizes that she only needs to love herself, to be who she wants to be. How she can grow as a person, and live her life to the fullest. Understanding that her emotions that she felt toward other people, she can feel about herself. Another example of Celie self growth is shown at the end of the passage. When she writes about situational irony that shows self discovery, “and then I figure this the lesson I was suppose to learn.” This situational irony accursed because she wasn expecting to realizes she doesn’t need to love someone else to feel good about herself in her conversation with Mr. _____. She was just expecting to have a normal conversation about life, and how their day went. Realizing that you can love yourself is an important lesson for Celie, because she had never believed she could really be loved for a long period of time in the novel.
