When a person is trained to hate or fear something, it is common to dread becoming what is hated. Often even a little piece of doubt can cause the person to worry and question themselves. Adolescent girls and women, even those who have never had sexual intercourse, often find that when their period is late they will panic and wonder if they are pregnant. That little bit of doubt can easily well up inside and become a formidable monster of despair and self-doubt. Phil Resch’s spiral into a state of self-doubt after simply considering the thought that he could be an android parallels the struggle young women face with a late period.
Resch begins questioning his humanity while trying to reason through how his boss, whom he had known for three years, could be an android without his knowing. The thought of false memories popped into his head, which he quickly rejected because only androids can receive false memories—unless he is an android, too. A woman’s response can happen just as quickly; they quickly deny their pregnancy because they never had intercourse, but the dread seeps in nonetheless. After contemplating for a minute, he asks Deckard if he could administer a test to see if he was an android or not—mimicking a woman’s instinct to go and buy a pregnancy test. Young women all over the internet have asked why they fear that they are pregnant when it is logically impossible. Psychologists have found that it is often caused by the negative stigma placed on pregnancy by parents and teachers. Young women believe pregnancy to be a punishment or believe that they will be punished if they are pregnant.
