The Self-Driving Car is an invention that always seems far into the future, like hoverboards or flying cars. But today, Self-Driving Cars are closer to coming into reality than they have ever been before. The Google Self-Driving Car is an invention that will save lives, reduce environmental impact and give independence to a wider range of people. This car embodies my idea of a preferred future because it is something that will inevitably change the world for the better by empowering people. A preferred future is one where people can have the freedom to go wherever they want, whenever they want.
The Self-Driving Car was invented to eliminate the need for human drivers. Humans are distracted drivers. There are about 37,000 car accidents per …show more content…

There is worry about the machines taking over. The anti self driving car stigma is fueled by a larger worry about the overtake of the machine and goes back to the Arts and Crafts movement. And it is inevitable that there will one day be a crash due to a Self-Driving car. But we have to keep in mind that the Self-Driving Car will do quantifiably more good than it will do evil. There are already driver-assisting cars that reduce human error. But to eliminate human error entirely something something. Additionally, as said by blah blah, people “assume that driverless cars have to be perfect rather than just better” (Forbes). But the fact is that simply having driver assisting cars is already improving the amount of driving accidents. And although the driverless car will strive to be perfect, at the end of the day it only need to be better. The best it can do is save as many lives as possible. And Google engineers understand this. They understand the importance in the software and design of these cars. Programmers still will need to instruct an automated car on how to act for the entire range of foreseeable scenarios, as well as lay down guiding principles for unforeseen scenarios. Although the Self-Driving car is in the near future, it may be a while until it is widely adopted. To trust the car is a big step for many people. But the company, Google has the ethos to back it up. Success only comes at the risk of failure. How susceptible would robot cars be to hacking? So far, just about every computing device we’ve created has been hacked. If the crash-avoidance system of a robot car is generally known, then other drivers may be tempted to “game” it, e.g., by cutting in front of it, knowing that the automated car will slow down or swerve to avoid an accident. TROLLY PROBLEM Finally, even if trolley problems do occur often and driverless cars are terrible at them, it’s still going to be a minor cost compared to the tens of
