Being a black man who lived in the Bottom had life experiences that has lead them to self destruction and resentment towards women. Toni Morrison was born February 18, 1931 (currently 86). She is well known as being a novelist, editor, literary critic, playwright, and professor. Toni Morrison is the definition of a phenomenal woman. She attended Howard University for her Bachelors degree and Cornell University to receive her Masters degree. In her career, she wrote approximately eight books, including: Beloved, Sula, The Bluest Eyes, Song of Solomon, A Mercy, Tar Baby, and etc. The main character of this novel is through the lens of Sula Peace, instead of it being all about Sula then readers will have an opportunity to see the lens through …show more content…

Dealing with turmoil within yourself may cause constant battles of lack of self esteem. Each of the characters faces turmoil, but each in different ways. The community that Shadrack, Tar Baby, Plum and Jude Green lives in is full of negativity which does not help their inner problems if anything it makes issues worse. Shadrack’s inner turmoil was the trauma that he never fully recovered from. Not receiving the proper help has caused him to have illusions and became socially detached. Tar Baby is depressed and became solely relying on alcohol after he lost his job. Their life experiences have caused them to self destruct. Jude has become unloyal towards his wife and kids because he is insecure to the point where he doesn't know what he wants.The men often cannot face the responsibility of their own …show more content…

“He finally makes the move to walk away from the hospital, and after getting a little turned around, he just starts walking. He's very weak from being in a hospital bed, so he has a hard time walking and looks like a "drunken man" (1919.15). When he gets to a town, he sits down on a curb because his feet are killing him and he tries to take his shoes off. But he can't get the laces to untie and he starts to cry. It's not just the shoelaces but "the fact that he didn't even know who or what he was" (1919.17). ” As the years progress, Shadrack Tar Baby shows clear signs of depression immediately. “For soon it became clear that he simply wanted a place to die privately but not quite alone. No one thought of suggesting to him that he pull himself together or go see a doctor or anything” (Morrison 40). Depression is feeling sad for a long period of time and effects daily lifestyles. The following are symptoms of depression: According to MayoClinic “These may include changes in sleep, appetite, energy level, concentration, daily behavior, or self-esteem. Depression can also be associated with thoughts of
