Self-Evaluation English Language and Composition turned out to be much more than I thought it would be. From talking to other students, it seems like we all came in with slightly different reasons for taking the class. For me, it was about a love of English and a desire to improve my writing skills. I never anticipated a class so heavily based on bettering your argumentative skills and exposing yourself to a greater variety of perspectives and then listening to your own reactions and those of the people around you. The thing is, all of it actually helps you to become a better writer. You’re probably sitting there like “well ya, duh!”, but I think it’s best left as a connection students have to make on their own. They’re cohesive. I think I started off the year strong with my Prince essay. I developed a meaningful voice that I can only hope I’ve continued to implement throughout the semester. The Prince assignment was the most structured out of all the essays so far this year, loosely asking us to relate the treatise to modern day politics. In some ways, I feel like the structure left more room for interpretation and helped me avoid your run-of-the-mill comparison (as strange as that might sound). The personal rubric topic given to me at the beginning of the semester was avoiding syntax errors and I do feel as though I improved upon this. I only had one other syntax error after the very first from my Prince essay. The Writers on Writing essay was where I first ran into the biggest problem I face with my writing. I had such a vision for this essay, but it fell short by way of a heavy reliance on evidence from the book and infringed on becoming a
