In reading the book, Self Leadership and the One Minute Manager, I learned more than I thought I would regarding assumed constraints, celebrating your points of power and collaborating for success. I had not realized how the past interferes with the present and future. For me, I like to think I let go of the past to move forward; however, I have now realized that I still assume present and future constraints based on the past. When working with the unions, I tend to be a bit reserved in pushing the boundaries due to a horrible incident that occurred with my predecessor. There are valuable opportunities that I let go by due to the way issues have gone in the past. The concept of celebrating points of power brought about thoughts of the different points being reflected in every employee, depending on their experience, knowledge or personality. While they may not hold the title, or be the most knowledgeable, they may have significant technical power that should not be overlooked. The collaborating for success section made me realize I had discounted the numerous opportunities to work with someone for the common goal. I am a leader for one department and a subordinate to the executive officer. My project roles change depending on the situation which means that I still need support and encouragement as my comfort level decreases.
