Two of My Favorite Type of Music

There are two musical genres that have had a profound impact on my life. One of them is Semba (a touch of the bellies), a traditional type of music and dance from Angola, and the other is Merengue a type of music and dance originating in the Dominican Republic. Watching Semba and Merengue closely I noted that their music are different, and the dance of semba seemed to be controversy of it music, Semba usually describe sad facts through lyrics, but it dance describe sensuality and happiness. Merengue in other hand is always a festively genre, but still there is a little misunderstanding between the movements and rhythm in semba and merengue, and people get the impression of being alike.

Their subject matter, clothes and instruments are totally different. For this reason, I decide to clarify a few things so that people don’t get confused. The subject matter of Semba which is often a fact portraits and the subject matter of Merengue is often to unwind and amuse. The Semba dressing style is often according to the music theme. Merengue in other hand is more according to social gathering in other words people dress according to the vibe, the place, the companionship and the moment. Finally, the instruments. Semba often uses a marimba and birinbau produce the music both instrument made with wood in which exhibits a sound similar to a piano, and Merengue often uses tambora an instrument made from salvaged rum barrels and maraca made by hollow balls from dried gourd shell (cuia "koo-ya") or coconut shell filled with seeds or dried beans and mounted on a wooden handle. Even though to play old Merengue music is necessary marimba.

In addition, as personal experience as a singer and dancer I found the rhythm of semba interesting because of it clear connection history to music the rhythm of semba has awaken the humble part of my self, its deep lyric regarding facts that make me think about life and open myself more often to others culture and habits. Helped me open my mind and interact with all type of people’s feelings.
