INTRODUCTION: In this experiment I was testing for antimicrobial sensitivity of Staphylococcus epidermidis by using the Kirby-Bauer Diffusion test. The three antibiotics utilized in this lab were: gentamicin, novobiocin, and penicillin. I determined the effectiveness of the antibiotic by observing and measuring the zone of inhibition for each antibiotic.
During the Mixed Substances lab the objective was to see how many properties of individual substances compare with properties of mixed substances. Dieufene Jessica Thelwell(Partner) 10/09/2014 1611 Evening Lab Introduction It is quite simple to overlook the roles diffusion and osmosis play in daily life. If one has ever spent too much time in the pool and watched as their fingers begin to turn prune-like, that is an example of osmosis. Osmosis is simply defined as the movement of a concentrated solvent through a semi permeable membrane to a more concentrated solvent.(Biology Corner) Relating to the earlier example of osmosis, your body acts as the more concentrated solvent for the water to penetrate. Diffusion is the exact opposite of osmosis.
In this lab we used two processes called Diffusion and Osmosis. Diffusion is the movement of molecules from areas of high concentration to areas of low concentration. Diffusion is a process that requires no energy and involves smaller non-polar molecules. In Figure 1 you can see the molecules spreading throughout the glass from the area of high concentration, so that the areas with low concentration are filled evenly as well. The other process was osmosis.

Although the concentrations of the different ions endeavor to balance out on both sides of the membrane, they cannot because the cell membrane sanctions only some ions to pass through channels (ion channels). At rest, potassium ions (K+) can cross through the membrane facilely. Additionally at rest, chloride ions (Cl-) and sodium ions (Na+) have a more arduous time crossing.

I noticed quickly that there was a mystery to how one substance can change into another. I had to find out more. As I sat there waiting, it dawned on me that this change would be gradual. After an hour, there had only been a slight variation in the color, but that change still meant something.
In this practical agar jelly cubes will be used to represent a cell. AIM: To model diffusion in a practical form and investigate the effect of surface area to volume ratio. HYPOTHESIS: It is hypothesised the smaller the cube the quicker and bigger the rate of diffusion will be and with a larger cube there will be a smaller percentage of diffusion due to its bigger volume.

Biology Design Practical Joshua Edwards What are effects of the volume of a potato and the amount of weight it loses when placed in salt solution? Introduction This design practical uses a potato’s surface area to volume ratio to see what affects it has on osmosis in different concentrations. Osmosis is the movement of water molecules through a cell membrane into an area of a higher solute concentration. The movement goes the way of the solvent with more solute because the lower solute concentration is drifting through balancing the ratio of solute per solvent (En.wikipedia.org, 2018).
Through the titration process, we are able to identify physical changes to the mixture such as the colour change to indicate the end point of the experiment. For example, the colour changes of phenolphthalein from colourless to pink and methyl orange from red to orange and subsequently yellow. Acids produce hydrogen ions and bases produce hydroxide ions. This causes the indicator to change colour due to the colour difference from the undissociate molecules.
