The Seneca-Cayuga Nation did not start as a whole. They were two different groups that decided to come together and be one nation. The Seneca-Cayuga Nation is a relatively small tribe that is located in Oklahoma that came from New York State, yet they still own and operate many businesses throughout the Empire State. The Seneca-Cayuga Nation originated from New York State. The tribe had not originally been one nation. They were scattered across different Iroquois tribes and lived separate lives. The Seneca-Cayuga Nation had villages ranging all the way down through West Virginia. There, all the people were named “Senecas” and eventually renamed the “Senecas of Sandusky.” A treaty with the United States in 1818 left the Mixed Band of Senecas and Shawnees with land removal in Ohio. In 1831, a treaty with the United States led the Senecas of Sandusky to sell their land in Ohio and move to a reserve, which neighbored the northern boundary of the Cherokee Nation in Indian Territory. Both tribes moved in 1832. The Seneca-Cayuga Nation did not go on the Trail of Tears for they were able to travel by steamboat. The trip took eight months to fulfill a 700-mile journey.
After traveling for more than half a year, the Seneca and mixed Band of Senecas and Shawnees (Cayuga) reached Indian Territory. They arrived at northeast Oklahoma in Ottawa and Delaware County, now formally known as Grove, Oklahoma. As a tribe of only over 5,000 members, with 5,059 people as their largest recorded, they operate many things even with their small population. The Seneca-Cayuga Nation in Oklahoma owns a casino, a tobacco company, and operate an off-track facility. The Grand Lake Casino and Seneca-Cayuga Tobacco Company are owned and operated by the Seneca-Cayuga Nation. They also hold five tribal ceremonies every year, which are seasoned
